I Haz Sproutz

Gardening Week One has completed, and here we have the shining star of my little project so far, the bean plants. They were very quick to sprout, and I soon realized that I didn't plant them deep enough into their containers and had to add some extra dirt. We live and learn. They are doing very well, and so far the cats seem uninterested. I hope it stays that way.

My basil, all three varieties of it (lemon, sweet, and Thai) are also doing quite well. Cilantro has also sprouted, though I suspect a cat has played with that as the two baby leaves are mysteriously on the dirt next to the sprout rather than on the sprout; you can kinda make that out in picture #3 here, which is as close up as I could take it and still have everything relatively visible. The catnip is also just, just starting to peek through.

Still no sign of the dill or chives I planted, but maybe they're just taking their time. The long-term forecast looks good for low, overnight temperatures, but I'm still going to wait at least another week before putting anything in the ground. I just don't trust the mountain climate enough at this point, and the last thing I want is all of my effort ruined by a late frost.

I was wondering how Juno would react to having succulent, tempting plants nearby! So far so good.

Yay! That's great news. A couple of my balcony-planted beans are coming up and beets too. Hopefully now that they've been transplanted into our garden they'll continue to grow. Other than that, nothing yet except some alyssum. Fingers crossed the veggies are coming soon.

I love how you recycled containers to use as starter planters. Mom and I discussed this today and are going to do it next year. Great idea.

Yahoo congrats plant mom! You'll likely have to protect cilantro and basil from little paws and beaks, if my experience holds true.

Oh, I forgot to mention I have catnip planted in a pot, too, so I can't wait till that one starts sprouting. I planted it in a pot on purpose because I don't want the neighbourhood cats to be any more encouraged to shit in my plot than they might already be by some of the other stuff going in.

Karen: Yeah, it makes sense to use the stuff in the recycling bin, doesn't it? Why purchase those little pots when you already have a whack sitting around at home??

Uh, slight brain freeze...I DID mention catnip in my post...Good God, I am losing it.

Anywho, the rest of the previous comment still stands...Ugh.

I'm so jealous. I have no outdoor space to plant a garden except for pots on my balcony. Seeing those cute, hardy little sprouts makes me want to start some herbs. Don't think the beans would grow properly in a pot. Bunny poop is great fertilizer.
